model farm

Focus 1

The focus of the project from 2017 to 2024 is the establishment and operation of the research and model farm "Ferme Modèle de Donomadé" for sustainable agriculture in the village of Donomadé in Togo. On six hectares of fertile farmland, a local farm team is developing future-proof models for small-scale tropical agriculture. These include regenerative cultivation methods using permaculture, agroforestry, and structured, healthy working practices without expensive machinery. The farm primarily uses locally available resources and cultivates a wide variety of locally adapted seeds. The goal is to enable greater added value for the surrounding farmers. This is achieved through proven and sustainable cultivation methods, as well as safe storage of agricultural products, sensible processing, and a community sales platform. "FeMoDo" is intended to become a model farm with a significant impact. To this end, the Swiss association also promotes exchange with international institutions. The farm's main products are: pineapples, mangoes, and citrus fruits for in-house juice production; palm nuts and coconuts for oil production; and bees, catfish, and goats for honey and meat sales. On February 20, 2025, we were able to hand over the farm to the management team for independent economic operation. This marked an important milestone in our work supporting the Tomety Kondji region.
